Premium Red Wine Vintage 2005
There are special red wines and this vintage 2005, from the Herdade dos Templarios, is one of the special red wine, produced in Portugal with premium quality. It’s called “garrafeira” (in English: wine cellar).
All starts with selective and manual Harvest in 20 kg boxes. The grapes are treated like queens or like little soft pearls and they are quickly transported to the winery.
In the winery it’s made the total stripping followed by natural and spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 26ºC.
After the malolactic fermentation followed by a stage in French (70%) and American (30%) oak barrels for 12 months will promote better development and balance of the red wine.
This red wine has undergone a long macerating in “cuvaison” in order to obtain a maximum extraction rate, red wines with more structure, fruit and color.
Stage of 12 months in French and American oak barrels and 12 months in bottle.
Designation: Red Wine Herdade dos Templarios Garrafeira
Appellation: Ribatejo DOC
Origin: Tomar, Portugal
Grape varieties: Aragonez- 70%, Alicante Bouschet – 20% and Castelão – 10%

Winemaker tasting notes: “tastes like red ripe fruits and has a compote and blackberry flavour.”

Aroma lively and rich but something dark, with hints of fruit and olives, tell us which is still in development phase (in 2007). Good volume in the mouth, with tannins present but not complicated, it’s a red with pretensions.

Known to the Spaniards as tempranillo (and as tinto roriz in Northern Portugal), this variety makes rich and robust wines throughout Portugal, and is often found in blends rather than as a single-varietal wine. Thriving in both sandy and clay soils, aragonez produces smooth, fruit-forward wines with undertones of spice.
Alicante Bouschet is a teinturier grape variety widely planted in Spain, Portugal and France, particularly in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. It has a long history in the wine world but lost ground in the later 20th Century in favor of more fashionable international varieties. However, Alicante Bouschet is enjoying a renaissance of sorts, with modern producers making some excellent examples at attractive prices. In a blend, Alicante Bouschet contributes to the soft texture and desirable color.
This grape is found predominately in southern Portugal, but also prospers in the poor, sandy-clay soils found throughout the Tejo region. The grape has the ability to produce well-structured wines with vibrant acidity and an endearing rustic quality with notes of plum, red currants and meaty aromas.
