Besides having a structural role, water is involved in numerous metabolic functions, such as digestion and renal clearance. It helps provide a good ionic balance of the body. At any time 10-15 litres of water are circulating in the gut of an average adult in order to ensure the digestion of food and as well as its subsequent assimilation. Much of this large amount of water is however absorbed by the colon, thereby avoiding an excessive loss of minerals.
